Marjane Satrapi, nata in Iran nel 1969, l’aveva già raccontato con il lirismo struggente della sua autobiografia a fumetti (adesso nei bookstore lo trovate “filed under” la denominazione graphic novel… e scusate per le parole italiane!).
Il consenso generale registrato intorno a questo racconto dimostra come la Satrapi sia riuscita a superare sia i confini di genere (e i relativi snobismi con cui spesso sono accolto i fumetti), sia il limite rappresentato dalla storia iraniana recente, compressa tra la dittatura di Reza Pahlevi e la teocrazia di Khomeini.
Persepolis, infatti, narra con angosciante precisione le vicende dei cittadini di quel grande, semisconosciuto Paese, che hanno vissuto, lottato e sofferto per affermare la propria dignità e il proprio diritto di vivere liberi a dispetto di un regime dal volto cangiante ma sempre contraddistinto da una disumana crudeltà verso i propri sudditi: lo zio comunista passato dal carcere dello Shah a quello degli integralisti, i genitori autentici liberali pieni di pietas verso gli sventurati connazionali, la nonna straordinario scrigno di saggezza e ironia libertaria, gli amici – pochi, in verità – più o meno sopravvissuti alle prove imposte dai pasdaran della rivoluzione (la guerra con l’Iraq, le privazioni dovute alla morale islamica)… una galleria di personaggi tratteggiati con grande efficacia, ora con malinconico affetto, ora con tagliente sarcasmo, a seconda di come si sono comportati davanti al potere tirannico verso il quale, invece, la protagonista si scaglia sempre con tutte le armi a sua disposizione.
E tuttavia, su questo commovente affresco di una generazione distrutta dal fondamentalismo si staglia nitida l’autobiografia di una gioventù vissuta pienamente, in equilibrio tra un inestinguibile anelito di libertà, umane paure (di veder morire i propri cari, di finire in galera o uccisa, di non trovare l’amore) e false speranze indotte da ideali troppo facilmente predicati in un Occidente cinico e distratto: del resto, è nell’esilio viennese che la ragazza Marjane diventa una donna consapevole di sé e del proprio ruolo nel mondo, fino a desiderare di tornare a Teheran e a scegliere poi di distaccarsene per sempre, in nome di un percorso personale che coniuga libertà e ricerca artistica.
Tra gli interpreti dei protagonisti principali, degne di note sono le voci di Paola Cortellesi e Sergio Castellitto (il padre di Marjane).
